Check Engine Light & Auto Diagnostics in Phoenix
A check engine light is a clue, not a diagnosis. At Ironclad Repair in North Phoenix, we find the cause first—then show you photos, mechanic notes, and a written estimate before any parts go on.
If your car is misfiring, stalling, draining the battery, refusing to crank, or throwing a warning light after a hot Phoenix start, bring it to 21609 N 12th Ave Suite 500, Phoenix, AZ 85027. Drivers from Surprise, Buckeye, Glendale, Peoria, and nearby West Valley cities come here when they want the problem explained—not a parts list sold first.

Who this is for
You need diagnostics when:
- The check engine light (or ABS / other lamps) is on or flashing
- The engine misfires, runs rough, stalls, or idles poorly
- You have an intermittent problem you cannot recreate on demand
- The car is slow to crank or will not start after sitting in the heat
- Something “feels off” after a long I-17 or Loop 303 commute and a code reader only gave you a letter-number string
A code from a parts-store scan is useful context. It is not the repair. Clearing the light without fixing the cause sends you back into Arizona heat with the same fault waiting to return.
What we actually check
Every diagnostic visit follows the same honest process:
1. Intake — We listen to the symptoms: when they happen, after a hot soak, under load, only with AC on, after rain, etc. 2. Scan — Codes plus live data, not a printout alone. 3. Confirm — Pinpoint tests that prove the cause. No parts fishing. 4. Document — Inspection photos and mechanic notes so you see what we saw. 5. Estimate — Written options and pricing before we turn a wrench. 6. Approve — You decide. Then we repair.
You leave with a plain-English explanation—not mystery add-ons.
Phoenix heat and why codes show up here
Valley driving stresses systems that stay quieter in milder climates:
- Heat-soaked sensors and connectors that fail after the car sits in the sun
- Batteries and charging systems that weaken early and set voltage-related codes
- AC load at idle that exposes marginal fuel, ignition, or idle control issues in traffic
- Dust, stop-and-go, and long freeway runs that turn small misfires into rough drivability
We diagnose with that context in mind. Owner Tony Mosier is an ASE Certified Master Technician with a focus on electrical systems and advanced diagnostics—useful when the issue is not “just a sensor.”
Typical time (no fake prices)
Most check-engine and drivability diagnostics take about 1 to 2 hours once the car is in the bay. Intermittent electrical faults can take longer. We call you when we know what is wrong and what the repair will cost.
You get a written estimate after inspection. We do not publish invented diagnostic or repair prices on this page—ask when you book or call (602) 730-1555.

Diagnostics FAQ
How long does a diagnostic take?
Most check-engine and drivability diagnostics take 1 to 2 hours once the car is in the bay. Intermittent electrical issues can take longer. We call you when we know what is wrong and what it will cost.
Do I need to leave my car?
Usually yes for a proper diagnosis—scheduled drop-off gives us time to scan, confirm, and price the work before we start. Quick issues sometimes finish same-visit; we will be honest about timing when you call.
Can you just reset the check engine light?
No. We will not clear a light and send you out without finding the cause. A reset without a repair is temporary and can leave you stranded or with a failed emissions/inspection readiness issue later.
What’s included?
Scan data, visual inspection, the tests needed to confirm the cause, photos, and mechanic notes. You see what we saw—then a written estimate before parts.
Do you work on all makes and models?
Yes. Domestic and import cars and light trucks. If a job needs a dealer-only tool or a specialty shop, we tell you that up front.
